Really really good Photoshop battles

Because who wouldn’t want to see Mugabe riding a dinosaur…

2 months Discovery Channel

Although the internet can be a terrible place, sometimes people band together online for a common cause: to alter photography, and compete in friendly photoshop battles, each silly adjustment more and more ridiculous, until an obvious winner is declared.

Most of these battles originate on Reddit — there is a popular sub-Reddit that features a different battle weekly, with a hall-of-fame page, and a winners wrap at the end of each year — but the photos used in such battles range from chance snaps of strangers, to world leaders caught in odd or compromising positions.

Below are some of our favourite Photoshop battles of all time, with a winner and an honourable mention for each.

Badass Hawk

Wildlife photographer Clint Ralph was in South Africa in order to snap a few photos of the Bearded Vulture, but it was a swaggering jackal hawk that turned this voyage into his most famous photo shoot.

The bird was apparently chasing away a flock of ravens who were eating a carcass, and Ralph managed to snap him at his most arrogant, strutting towards the camera like a gangsta rapper, or a runway model. Not surprisingly, everyone loved the bird’s ‘tude, placing him in different badass scenarios.

“I loved the attitude and comedy of the shot, I knew it would capture the imagination of the public,” Ralph told the Metro shortly after the photo blew up. He was dead right.

Mugabe Falls

A photograph of Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe falling down a set of steps in 2015 was quickly leaped upon with glee by the internet, with #MugabeFalls becoming a popular hashtag, used to display the many hilarious photoshopped images of Mugabe’s body in various scenarios: surfing a ten-footer, dancing with Beyonce, and preparing to run a footrace.

Displaying his world-class lack of humour, Mugabe punished 27 of his bodyguards for allowing such a thing to happen, and demanded his government take action to delete the photoshopped images from the internet, clearly not understanding how the internet works. He even tried to quash the original images, and had government officials insist that he didn’t fall over, but stumble – despite the photo evidence.

Logan In A Limo

When Hugh Jackman tweeted out an on-set photo of himself as Wolverine, looking longingly out of a limousine window, it was too tempting not to mess with. His sad face, and paw-like hands popping up from the bottom of the window made parallels with dogs locked in cars rather obvious, with other Photoshop geniuses placing him in cardboard boxes, and even behind Shia LaBeouf at the theatre during his movie marathon art-piece. Hugh must have known what would happen – maybe it was a brilliant marketing gimmick for the Wolverine movie?

Minor Mistake Marvin

In 2014, a Redditor uploaded a photo of a young boy standing expressionless in front of a burnt ramen conditioner sitting inside a microwave. The photo was captioned “He just wanted some noodles”, but the subject of his malaise was quickly forgotten as the young lad was transport to behind the desk in the Oval Office, in front of a burning building, and even to outer space. This photo is often used to express despair at some stupid self-inflicted action, as his little face says so much without really saying anything besides, “I totally screwed up”. We can all relate to this kid.

Trump’s Tricky Pen

A photo of Trump struggling to put a pen back together has become the subject of one of many, many popular Photoshop battles involving the current POTUS. Most people replaced the pen with various childish items: lego, dinosaur figurines, blocks — which isn’t surprising considering his perceived mental age — while others used Trump’s odd hand placement and perplexed face to show him fumbling with rudimentary tasks, such as slicing a piece of pizza. Considering Trump’s thin skin, and love of late-night web browsing, such memes are one of the best forms of protest available to the common man.

Stair Surfer

A photo of a man sliding down his carpeted stairs on a piece of cardboard, beer in hand, clearly having the time of his life, was too perfect not to become a Photoshop battle hall-of-famer. It first appeared on Reddit in 2012, and has since been photoshopped to the point where even the original image looks fake. This one still pops up every now and then, five long years later – which is an eternity online.
